Personal Response: Lick and Lather

Janine Antoni seems to be very metaphorical artist.  The idea of her sculpting herself with her tongue and sculpting herself by lathering the soap in the tub while naked has such a deep meaning that I had a hard time figuring out. I am more of a literal artist, so I struggle creating metaphorical art, and interpreting the underlying, metaphorical meanings of artists' work.  After watching it a few times and hearing Janine say the comment of how we look to ourselves in the mirror, and that everyone has their own securities, I began to understand her meaning.  The soap exulting process spoke to me more than the chocolate. The way she was in the nude while sculpting herself in the tub portrayed a very intimate mood. I felt it was intimate because Janine was creating what she thinks she looks like, and I believe deep down, everybody loves themselves, you just have to ignore the outside judgment or society-based appearances. However, she did run her face smooth enough that the facial features weren't as noticeable. I believe she did this because in the mirror, you don't see what everyone else sees. You just see your face, while the world sees your face and your mind and personality.
